Here is a detailed guide on how to become a bartender:
1. Understand the Role of a Bartender vs Mixologist
Before diving into the specifics of training and qualifications, it’s essential to understand what bartenders and mixologists do.
Bartenders prepare and serve drinks. They interact with customers and manage the bar area. Sometimes, they also handle food service. They need to possess a good knowledge of various beverages, bar tools, classic cocktails, and the art of mixology.
A mixologist is a skilled expert who crafts cocktails and creates unique cocktail recipes. This includes knowledge of different spirits, liqueurs, bitters, and mixers. It also involves understanding flavor profiles, techniques, and presentation.Â
2. Research the Requirements
The requirements to become a bartender can vary significantly depending on your location. In Ontario bartenders are required to be at least 18 years of age or older to be employed to sell or serve alcohol.Â
You might be wondering if you need a license to be a bartender. Anyone in Ontario who serves, handles or sells alcohol, must be in possession of a Smart Serve certification. Completion of this certification is how to get your bartenders license.Â
The Smart Serve training helps you understand the legal aspects of serving alcohol and promotes responsible service practices. This Smart Serve bartender certification cost is usually inexpensive and is a mandatory class to become a bartender.Â
3. Get Educated With Bartender Training For Beginners
While formal education isn’t always necessary to become a bartender, attending bartending school can provide a solid foundation. These programs typically cover topics such as:
Mixology: Learn to make different cocktails and understand the ingredients in them at a mixology class. Our bartender mixology certification is a great place to start!Â
Customer Service: Developing skills to interact effectively with patrons.
Bar Management: Understanding inventory management, pricing, and the financial aspects of running a bar.
4. Gain Experience Working In A Bar
Many bartenders start as barbacks or servers to gain experience in the bar environment. As a barback, you’ll assist bartenders by stocking supplies, cleaning the bar, and learning the flow of service. This hands-on experience is very valuable as it can help you build the skill set and confidence needed to be a bartender.
5. Create a Resume and Start Applying
Create a resume highlighting your experience, education, and any relevant certifications. Start applying for bartending positions in local bars, restaurants, and clubs. Networking in the industry can also be beneficial, as many jobs are filled through referrals.
Don’t forget to mention on your resume your mixology certification class from 180 Drinks!
6. Prepare for Interviews
When you land an interview, be prepared to demonstrate your knowledge of cocktails and drink-making techniques. Employers often look for candidates who can showcase their ability to engage with customers and work in a team. Be ready to answer questions about your approach to serving customers and handling busy shifts.
Becoming a bartender requires a combination of education, experience, and personal skills. By following these steps and committing to ongoing learning, you can start a rewarding career in bartending. In this job, you can show your creativity, meet new people, and enjoy the lively bar scene. Register today to start your journey on obtaining a mixology bartender certification in Ontario!
