Rum Appearance

Sweet dreams are made of rum. Or so we like to believe.

One of the most popular liquors in the world, rum is made by fermenting and distilling sugarcane molasses. This is then aged in oak barrels. The combination of the sweet sugarcane and the woody oak gives the rum a distinct appearance and flavour.

During your tasting session, you will learn more about the appearance of rum.

This can vary depending on the country of origin and the distillery. But you can identify these different kinds of rum:

Dark rum: Deep brown in appearance, this rum gains its colour after being aged in oak barrels for a long period.

Gold rum: With a light amber colour, this rum gains this colour from a relatively short period of aging in the oak barrels.

White rum: White rum or light rum is typically colourless and hasn’t undergone aging in oak barrels. They retain more of the flavour of the sugarcane.

During our rum-tasting session, you will have the opportunity to taste different kinds of rum.

Rum Aroma

You might be forgiven for thinking that rum is all about sugarcane. While rum is derived from sugarcane molasses, a distinct hint of brown sugar or other sugary notes may be found. But there’s more to rum than sugarcane. Let’s find out:

Spices: Rum has a lot of aromatic complexity. You can find notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, or clove in rum. These come from the oak barrels in which rum is aged. This gives rum a warm, aromatic flavour.

Fruits: Flavoured rums are quite popular. You will come across rums infused with flavours such as mango, banana, coconut, or citrus fruits.

Even unflavoured rum can also have notes of maple and dark fruit.

Unlike whiskey, which has a smoky or peaty aroma, rum often has a sweeter aroma.

Rum Taste

During our rum tasting sessions, you can expect to sample a variety of rums. From light and crisp white rums to aged and full-bodied dark rums, the tasting journey will allow you to explore diverse flavours and appreciate the journey your rum has undertaken from farm to glass.

Rum isn’t a fussy drink. You don’t always need fancy cutlery to experience the delights of this spirit. But the type of glass that you use can affect the drinking experience. For example, glasses with a narrow mouth can help concentrate the aromas of the rum. It’s a matter of personal preference, but we suggest Glencairn glasses as a popular choice for rum tasting events.

Ultimately, we know that everyone’s palate is unique. The beauty of a rum tasting session lies in the opportunity to discover your own preferred flavour profiles. Having said that, what are the flavour profiles to be found in rum?

Sweetness: White rums tend to have a more delicate or subtle sweetness while darker rums offer more caramelized notes. Expect toffee or caramel notes to dominate in dark rums. Also, brown sugar, honey, and of course, molasses will also percolate through. Some dark rums can also have interesting notes of coffee or chocolate! A premium aged rum can have notes of oak, vanilla, and spice.

Spiciness: Rum can pack a fair punch. Look for hints of black pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, or clove during your rum tasting experience.

Fruitiness: Fruitier notes of rums are often more challenging to identify in terms of flavour as these are more subtle. For example some common tropical fruit notes may include banana, or mango or citrus.
