The numbered samples that are included will help you keep track of which spirit is which until the big reveal at the end. This approach makes this a truly blind whiskey tasting kit!
Let’s begin with the obvious problem of understanding the difference between whisky and whiskey. When choosing which name to use, the general rule is that those that are made in Ireland or the United States are called whiskey and those from Scotland, Canada or Japan are called whisky.
To enhance your whiskies of the world tasting set experience please prepare the below before you start.
Glassware: This should be comfortable to hold but narrow at the opening. Tumblers are too wide and allow aromas to escape. Glencairn tasting glasses are ideal!
Space: Ensure there is enough space to hold your glasses and bottles. This may sound obvious, but once you have laid out all your other tasting equipment alongside your spirits, you will be surprised how much room you will need.
Food: Never taste spirits on an empty stomach. Ideally, eat something an hour before tasting. Be sure not to eat too much. Avoid strongly flavored foods an hour before tasting as it can deaden your palate making it harder to detect taste and aroma.
Water: Use still water to add to the spirit and sparkling water to hydrate yourself and to cleanse your palate. Choose spring water over mineral water as it is pure, with fewer taste-affecting additives, natural or otherwise.
Notes: Pen to record impressions
Preparation of the above will help make this the best whiskey tasting set experience!

All cereal grains are seeds, with a hard outer skin. The job of whisky makers is to penetrate this shell to reach the endosperm, which is full of starchy carbohydrates that are converted to sugar, and then alcohol.
Practically any grain can be fermented into alcohol, but barley, corn, rye, and wheat are the main players for whisky, comprising the majority of the grains used.
