Each rum is unique, however at the same time you can cluster them into groups with similar interests and characters called flavour camps. The four rum flavour camps are: Oaky & Rich, Crisp & Dry, Soft & Dry, And Light & Fresh.
This rum tasting kit has been organized with a curated selection of cask aged rums that appear in the different rum flavour camps and the two major styles of Aged English-speaking Caribbean Rums, and Aged Latin Style Rums. Grouping the rums like this helps you to identify the major types of rums you prefer, which helps you to zero in on new rums to try that belong to similar cohorts.
Rum is simple. Take a sugar solution, add yeast, ferment it, then distill. What makes each rum different is how each distillery approaches these principles in different ways. Legally, rum can only be made by distilling the products of cane-sugar manufacture (molasses, cane syrup or fresh cane juice).

The Edrington Group’s purchase of Brugal in 2008 did not only result in a Scotch distiller learning about another category, it also gave the rum firm access to years of expertise in oak, especially in the realm of Sherry casks (Edrington owns The Macallan and Highland Park). The first evidence of this was the 1888, which is first aged up to 8 years in American oak barrels followed by Spanish oak sherry casks for up to 6 years.

Five generations of the Pellas family have made rum at the San Antonio Sugar Mill, in Chichigalpa, Nicaragua. The original distillery was built in 1890, and still uses molasses extracted from the firm’s own cane fields.

The first record of rum being made at Appleton Estate is in 1749 making it one of the great repositories of rum heritage.
This rare blend is where all of the estate’s characters come together. The rums that make up this blend of rare and hand-selected pot and column still rums are crafted with Jamaican limestone-filtered water, with no added flavours, and have all been aged for a minimum of 12 years in the tropical climate of Jamaica.

Plantation XO 20th Anniversary rum is a combination of pot-stilled and column-stilled Barbadian rums that are initially aged in the Caribbean in ex-bourbon casks for 12-20 years. They are then transported to France for a second 12-18 months aging in small French oak casks.

This rum was created in 1976 in the highlands of Guatemala (Aged at 7,545 ft above the clouds). This sugarcane rum features a woven band around the middle as a reference to the original hand-woven palm leaf bottle cover.
Solera is a process of aging liquids by fractional blending so that the finished product is a mixture of ages, with the average age increasing as the process continues over many years. The solera method is used to age Ron Zacapa 23, which results in a combination of rums aged between 6 and 23 years.
