In order for a spirit to be called “Tequila” it has to come from one of five specific states in Mexico: Guanajuato, Jalisco, Michoacan, Nayarit, or Tamaulipas. Most Tequilas come from the state of Jalisco.  Our tequila tasting kit features Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo types of tequila.

  • Palate-cleansing snack and pipette for adding water

El Tequileño Reposado Gran Reserva

Don Jorge created El Tequileno to honour the birthplace of Tequila. He uses the highest quality agave sourced from the Highlands of Jalisco. Pure volcanic spring water is used during the milling process to extract natural sugars from the cooked agave. 150 Year old mango trees are grown very close to the fermentation tanks and these trees impact the natural yeast that forms during fermentation resulting in a incredible unique flavour of Tequila.

El Tequileño Reposado Gran Reserva is aged for a minimum of 8 months in American Oak and blended with a small amount of Añejo aged in American Oak.

This añejo tequila from Gran Centenario is a 100% blue agave and aged in new French Limousin oak barrels up to 36 months. It is unusual to see this type of oak used for tequila production and is more typically found used to age Cognac.

What are the differences between the types of tequila included in the set?

Below is a breakdown of the different types of tequila we.

1. Silver, Blanco, or Plata Tequila: Transparent product without additives obtained after distillation without anything added except water for dilution to adjust to the commercially required alcohol by volume.

2. Aged or Reposado Tequila: Tequila subjected to a process of maturation (aging) for at least 2 months in direct contact with wooden barrels of oak or holm Oak.

3. Extra Aged or Añejo Tequila: Tequial subjected to a process of maturation [aging] for at least one year in direct contact with wooden barrels of oak or holm Oak.

Where is tequila made?

Tequila has a recognised Appellation of Origin (AOC) meaning that tequila is covered by and named after a geographical region. Declared by the Mexican government in 1974 the Appellation is in consideration of specific characteristics to tequila due to location, climate and cultural traditions of a particular area.

Tequila can only originate from five Mexican states, being the entire state of Jalisco and specific bordering areas of the surrounding states of Guanajuato, Michoacán and Nayarit.
