The key point for single malt whisky tasting set is the use of 100 percent malted barley as the grain for the scotch samples. It should also be noted that all of the whisky that goes into a bottle of single malt can come from different batches of production, but must come from just one distillery. That is what the “single” in single malt means.
You might still be wondering what the “malt” part is in a single malt sampler pack. Barley has high levels of starch and enzymes that facilitate the fermentation process. Malted barley is the “malt” element of malt whisky. Barley is steeped in water, spread out and left to germinate. This breaks down the grain’s cell walls, allowing enzymes to access starches.
By definition this is a single malt scotch tasting set.
This scotch tasting kit includes two rounds of tasting. For each tasting ½ fl oz (15ml) is fine (half the sample bottle).
For the first tasting order you line the bottles up in sequence from left to right using the order in the scotch tasting guide.
For the second tasting order it will be randomised as you will taste spirits without knowing what is in the bottle or commonly referred to as a “blind” tasting. The rationale for a blind tasting is that knowing the brand or even the bottle appearance can influence you before you have taken your first sip.
