During this self directed bourbon tasting experience you will learn:

  • How to taste bourbon, and it’s key aroma’s and flavours
  • The history of bourbon, how it’s made, and it’s classifications

 

Our bourbon tasting kit includes:

  • Five 1 oz samples of bourbon (Details below types included)
  • A tasting card for each bourbon where you can record your impressions, and on the reverse side provides it’s background and it’s tasting notes
  • Palate-cleansing snack and pipette for adding water
  • Bourbon tasting guide covering history, production, classifications, key aroma’s and flavours, and how to taste

Bourbon itself has no age requirement, but to be labeled straight bourbon it must be at least two years old. Each bottle of Baker’s is filled from one single barrel.

What are the different types of bourbon?

The different types of bourbon are outlined below.

Bourbon Whiskey: “Whiskey produced in the U.S. at not exceeding 80% alcohol by volume (160 proof) from a fermented mash of not less than 51 percent corn and stored at not more than 62.5% alcohol by volume (125 proof) in charred new oak containers.”

Straight Bourbon Whiskey: “Bourbon whiskey stored in charred new oak containers for 2 years or more ‘Straight Bourbon Whisk[e]y’ may include mixtures of two or more straight bourbon whiskies provided all of the whiskies are produced in the same state.”

Blended Bourbon Whiskey: “Blended whiskey produced in the U.S. containing not less than 51% on a proof gallon basis (excluding alcohol derived from added harmless colouring, flavouring, or blending materials) straight bourbon whiskey.”

Blended Straight Bourbon Whiskey: “A blend of straight whiskies produced in the U.S. consisting entirely of straight bourbon whiskies.”

What type of barrels is bourbon matured in?

Bourbon must be matured in brand-new, charred oak casks. The use of brand-new, heavily charred casks in Bourbon production tends to impart all Bourbon with very sweet, rich, spicy, and vanilla-heavy flavours. 

There is no minimum aging requirement for selling it in North America, however at least 3 years to be sold outside North America.
