The most widely accepted story begins in the 1940s. Two key people are known for creating the Mai Tai. They are Victor J. “Trader Vic” Bergeron and Donn Beach, also known as Don the Beachcomber.Â
Trader Vic claims that he invented the Mai Tai in 1944 at his tiki bar in Oakland, California. He said he made the drink for some friends from Tahiti. He used rum, orange curaçao, orgeat syrup, and fresh lime juice. He reportedly named it “Mai Tai” after hearing the Tahitian word for “good,” which his friends exclaimed upon tasting it.
Donn Beach also says he created a similar drink at his bar, Don the Beachcomber, in Hollywood during the 1930s. His version of the drink had different types of rum, fresh juices, and many exotic ingredients. This showed the complex and often secretive nature of tiki cocktails.

The history of the Zombie cocktail dates back to the 1930s. Donn Beach opened his famous tiki bar in Hollywood, California, in 1933. He started mixing different rums and tropical flavors. His goal was to create exotic drinks that took customers to a tropical paradise.Â
The cocktail called “Zombie” got its name from a story. A customer said that after drinking a few, they felt like a “zombie.” This was because the drink has a high alcohol content. As tiki culture surged in popularity, the Zombie cocktail became a staple in bars across the United States.Â
In 1960, the famous bartender Trader Vic helped make the drink more popular. He created his own version of the Zombie cocktail. This led to many different versions of the drink. Each bartender added their own twist to the original recipe.
