What’s the unofficial drink of Bermuda? And of the sailing or boating community? It’s a dark, sweet, spicy cocktail appropriately called the Dark and Stormy. If you are thinking of a cocktail gift that is not run of the mill, the Dark ‘N Stormy kit is perfect. It’s the most recognized drink in the boating world and one of the most popular cocktails with rum the world over.

So, the story goes that it was sometime after the end to World War I, that the Dark and Stormy was born. It was created on the island of Bermuda, home to many a shipwreck, and also home to the Goslings, who had already created a name on the island with their rum production.

Eventually, the sailors who frequented Bermuda realized that a marriage between the standard Gosling’s rum and ginger beer was a match made in heaven. Legend has it that the name, Dark and Stormy, comes from a sailor who, suitably drunk, likened the cocktail’s dark looks to the stormy clouds at sea.

What Is Included In The Dark and Stormy Cocktail Gift?

Liquor: Rum

The cocktail was originally made from Gosling’s Black Seal rum and Barritt’s Ginger Beer. But their partnership soured and Gosling eventually started making their own ginger beer. Of course, you can’t patent a drink recipe, but you can patent a name. And it’s illegal to make a Dark ‘N Stormy with anything other than Gosling’s Black Seal rum.

Goslings rum is made from a 150-year-old Gosling family recipe which is aged in charred American oak casks. During World War 2, bottles were in short supply, so Goslings bottled their rum in discarded champagne bottles. The bottles were resealed with black wax and the locals began asking the Goslings for the “black seal rum”, and the brand was born. The logo of a barrel-juggling black seal was added to the label many years later.

Order by 5pm for next day delivery via our local couriers in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

What’s the classic Dark and Stormy cocktail recipe?

There are many variations of the Dark and Stormy cocktail recipe. But let’s bear in mind that you can’t call this cocktail a Dark and Stormy unless you include Gosling’s Black Seal rum. With that in mind, here’s the recipe that our mixologists swear by:

 

2 ounces Gosling’s Black Seal rum

4-5 ounces of ginger beer

Lime wedge garnish

 

Take a tall Collins glass filled with ice. Add in the rum and ginger beer. Stir well and garnish with the lime wedge. Interested in trying this out? Then try out our Dark and Stormy gift set.
